Make a smart move - Work for tomorrow, today will be taken care of

There are certain abilities which comes with your own nature, but there are certain other abilities which need to be cultivated. One of the best that I can think of at the moment is the ability to 'work for tomorrow'

Specifically from the organization perspective all it means is to move our working culture from 'fire fighting mode' and enable us to be the 'builders of tomorrow'.

If an organization is growing, definitely it is because of some people who naturally hold this ability. Imagine if all of us cultivate this.

I my view, ability to understand matter well in advance about specific scenarios and make the move to counter or resolve the probable issues or requirements proactively as much as possible holds the key to cultivating this ability. More over, there is fun in doing your job if you are in this state.

This will also enable us to be in the dream state of always being in performance based leadership.

1. Understand managers vision for the team and client and keep doing things in background in advance so that when the right time comes the data is ready or necessary steps are either already taken to tackle the situation or can be taken with immediate effect.

2. Understand what client would want. Provide solutions at least on paper for exactly what he might want in future. The ability to anticipate the issues/hardships the client might undergo in future, letting them know on a timely and professional manner in advance and to seek suggestions from them to whether you would like to give a solution for that proactively is some thing which will client's confidence to highest levels.

These kind of approach asks for lot of proactive measures which will definitely take time from your normal BAU work. But the moment you see these as investments for future, the dimension of this activity takes new shapes and will encourage

There is a joy in working this way.

Hope this blog will encourage some one other than me also to start taking proactive and timely steps towards redefining client's confidence/satisfaction and there by probability of new/repeat business as much as it is already helping me.

Start defining your's and your client's targets.. You dont need to work for every day targets any more, for, your target's will always be medium to long term. Happy working days :)

Realizing and overcoming the habit of procrastinating.

Here are the few points that are really helpful to come out of this habit of Postponement :

1. Realizing the habit and benefits of overcoming: To come out of any habit first and foremost thing is to recognize that this habit exists and it is harmful. We can look back and find out some example where we had been procrastinating something and you had lost something. A little pinch of it will be helpful to get out of it, at the same time we don’t need to regret. Focusing on the benefits of getting rid of the habit will help and keep motivated. Some of the benefits can be bulleted as
  • Mind will be more relaxed and focused
  • We will feel more energetic the whole day
  • We will get more things done in a day
  • Our things will be well organized, so we will do right things at right time
  • We will build a trust in other people’s eyes by becoming more reliable through our sense of keeping commitments.
  • We will deliver the quality from our task
  • We will gain more skills and strength.
  • We will build better relationship
  • We will gain self-respect. etc

2. Time Management: Develop to follow one particular methodology to manage time. Use your calendar, To Do list, reminder in the phone as much as possible. If you get too many works a day you can follow “Getting Things Done” or any other task management technique that fits best.

3. Plan your entire pending task and Get done with them: You must have realized that you are much more relaxed and energetic the just before you go for long holidays. The reason is because you finish all your pending tasks before you leave for holiday and your mind is free from all those things that are done or planned. You must document all the tasks that are to be done in future to keep your mind free from them. This is one of the greatest steps to come out of habit because it frees your mind from consuming so much of your energy and inspires you to follow a well planned task management.

4. Fresh Start: Give yourself a fresh start. Clean your work area, organize it according to the plan.

5. Commitment: Most obvious part of getting rid of any tendency is to be committed towards the practices. If you just write down all your pending tasks, you will feel more relaxed and will be able to stay committed. You must finish your task on the time when you plan to at all cost. If you postpone it a very few times it’s very possible that you end up with the same cycle of procrastination.

6. Make things interesting: Do the things with more and more interest instead of compulsion. We will find that once we start practicing things religiously, we will gain interest in many the things that we do. Our planning can be in such a way we mix the things and don’t let the plan be a continuum of tasks which we don’t like. Let there be some fun in between.
Once we follow these key points, we will see many other obstacles in the path simply disappear and you gain much more skills and strength to tackle with challenges. All this is achievable and the positive attitude will definitely get us there.

Procrastination ? Sound familiar to most?

We often want to do many things in the life, be it career and professional growth, personal interests, interpersonal relationships or social welfare but eventually we end up doing a very few of them either out of compulsion or in situations when left with no other choice than doing it.
Somewhere deep within us we know that we could have achieved much more but we hadn’t acted devotedly. Whenever we sat and analyzed, many of us must have reached to the conclusion that one of the major cause is habit of procrastinating.
E.g. My interest in learning guitar. I know nobody would ever come to me and question if I don’t learn it. Also it’s no big surprise that I haven’t yet registered for the classes! Every time I hear the guitar, I get the thought, but still keep pushing it on to the “later on” category of tasks.

We have cultured this tendency to delay things to such an extent that many ‘to-dos’ linger in our mind for months and years and still they never get done. Over a period of time, our brain becomes clogged with the list of “to-dos” that may lead to depression /total carelessness.

In a case when a task of 16 hours is given, most of us instead of efficiently using the time would laze out and struggle to complete the work in the nth hour.
It’s amazing to see how much loss we are incurring because of the unaware habit of postponement.
This behavior sets in a pattern which invites stress to the body and mind. The common patterns usually seen are:
  1. Sense of insecurity: When we postpone something that is important but not urgent now but will be urgent after a certain amount of time and if some other task, which precedes in the list of priorities, pops-up by that time. This postponement would categorize it into important and urgent and this sets in a sense of insecurity and fear of not being able to complete the work.
  2. Engagement of mind: Some part of the brain will always know that there is something which is incomplete and it will not be able to relax completely.
  3. Lack of focus: When your mind is constantly engaged in too many activities all the time. It finds difficult to focus on any one thing.
  4. Skills fade away: We do less than what we could do. Thus our capabilities are not utilized to its maximum extent, When we utilize maximum potential of ours we gain more strength and skills.
  5. Slow down of progress: When our mind is stuffed with too many unorganized thoughts, we tend to lose focus and are unable to develop any skill sets, thus obviously our progress is hampered.
  6. Important things remain unattended: There are certain things in the life that are very important when life is seen in a larger context but not so urgent. We may never be doing them.
  7. Compromising the quality: Sometime we delay things to such a greater extend that we end up completing the work at the cost of quality.
If this very idea clicks in the mind that we really own this very pattern of procrastinating, we can get out of it. Many of us, at some point of time or other realize this addiction but are unable to come out of it.
